Kansas Nursing License Requirements: RN, LPN

Overview

The major purpose and focus of the Kansas State Board of Nursing is to protect the public health, safety and welfare of the citizens of Kansas through the licensure and regulation process. Public trust is the most important aspect of the Board’s work.

Registered Nursing (RN) & Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) Licensure by Examination

Applicants Must Meet the Following Requirements:

  • Submit application fee in the form of money order, personal check, or cashiers check made payable to the “Kansas State Board of Nursing. The application fee must accompany the complete application.
  • If you have ever been disciplined by any governmental agency or Board, you must provide a dated/certified copy of that particular Board order or disciplinary/administrative act.
  • Provide one completed fingerprint card in order to conduct background checks with the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and FBI. It is possible to have the fingerprinting done at the office of the Board of Nursing. There is a $7.50 charge. Different agencies may charge different amounts for making the prints. The facility taking the print must mail the card and waiver directly to KSBN upon completing the prints.

Note: The Board of Nursing will not license a person until the background checks are received. Enclose a check or money order for $50.00 payable to the Kansas State Board of Nursing. Fees are nonrefundable.

  • An official transcript, showing completion of the nursing program with the degree posted, must be sent to the Board of Nursing by the registrar/school.
  • Mail the completed licensure application along with the required fees to the following address:

  • Register with the testing agency before or just after submitting the licensure application to take the licensure test, NCLEX-RN (National Council Licensure Examination). You may use any of the following ways to complete the registration:
    • Register online. The registration fee of $200 can be paid via American Express, Visa, or MasterCard. OR
    • By mail: You may request the Board of Nursing office to send an NCLEX registration form. Provide essential details in the form and include an appropriate fee of $200.0 in the form of a money order or cashier’s check made payable to the NCSBN (National Council of State Boards of Nursing). Mail it to the following address:

  • When all your essential documents are approved, the Board will inform the testing agency, Pearson VUE, making you eligible to take the licensure exam.
  • Pearson VUE will send you an ATT (Authorization to Test) via email or on the address provided by you during the registration process.
  • Upon receiving the ATT, schedule the licensure exam.

 

  •  Foreign Educated Applicants:
  • Must be a graduate of a school for professional nursing that is approved by the board as defined in rules and regulations.
  • Have education transcripts and nursing license evaluated by an approved Credentialing Agency and have the report sent directly to the Kansas State Board of Nursing. The approved credentialing agency evaluates an applicant’s education and registration credentials to certify that the applicant is a first-level general nurse and meets all of the registration requirements to be licensed as a professional in that field.
  • KSBN requires a CGFNS Professional Report.
  • If your native language is not English or if you completed your nursing education in a language other than English, you are required to show English proficiency by passing the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) exaThe Board has approved the following scores for the TOEFL exam:

  • Writing – 20
  • Speaking – 20
  • Reading – 19
  • Listening – 20

  • Complete graduation from a Board approved nursing school in the U.S. states or territories or from a nursing school in a foreign country. The education program must include clinical experience.
  • Obtained license in another jurisdiction by passing the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) or the State Board Test Pool Examination (SBTPE).
  • Provide verification of license sent directly from your original state of licensure to the Kansas Board. If your state of licensure uses NURSYS, then you can verify your license using the NURSYS website. Else, fill the upper part of the endorsement verification form and forward it to your original state of licensure.
  • Mail the completed licensure application along with the required fees to the following address:
