New Jersey Nursing License Requirements RN, LPN

Overview

The New Jersey Board of Nursing was established in 1912 to protect the health, safety and welfare of New Jersey’s residents by ensuring that those who practice nursing are qualified and competent to do so. This board licenses registered nurses and practical nurses, and regulates the nursing profession in New Jersey.

Registered Nursing (RN) & Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) Licensure by Examination

Applicants Must Meet the Following Requirements:

  • Applicants must have graduated from an approved school of professional nursing or practical nursing.
  • Successfully clear the criminal background check.
  • Submit online application or printable application.
  • Attach a clear, full-face passport photograph (2 ̋x 2 ̋) of your head and shoulders, taken within the past six months, with your name printed on the back of the photo.
  • Submit a copy of your birth certificate.
  • Submit a non-refundable fee of $200.00 (which includes license fee of $120.00, application fee of $75.00 and a $5.00 surcharge fee) in the form of money order or personal check (while paying through paper application) made payable to the “New Jersey Board of Nursing”.
  • Submit completed certification and authorization form.
  • An Official Letter of Program Completion must be sent directly to the Board of Nursing office from the approved school. It must be signed by the program chair and must be sealed with the official school seal before you may sit for NCLEX.
  • Graduates of Out-of-State Nursing Programs must have their nursing program send a transcript that states the applicant has met all of the requirements for graduation, providing the degree conferred and the date of conferral.
  • Submit the completed application, fees, and all the required documents to the following address:

  • Register with the testing agency before or just after submitting the licensure application to take the licensure test, NCLEX (National Council Licensure Examination). You may use any of the following ways to complete the registration:
    • Register online. The registration fee of $200 can be paid via American Express, Visa, or MasterCard. OR
    • By mail: You may request the Board of Nursing office to send an NCLEX registration form. Provide essential details in the form and include an appropriate fee of $200.00 in the form of a money order or cashiers check made payable to the NCSBN (National Council of State Boards of Nursing). Mail it to the following address:

  • When all your essential documents are approved, the Board will inform the testing agency, Pearson VUE, making you eligible to take the licensure exam.
  • Pearson VUE will send you an ATT (Authorization to Test) via email or on the address provided by you during the registration process.
  • Upon receiving the ATT, schedule the licensure exam.

Foreign Educated Applicants Must Also:

  • Submit a transcript review which must include the full education course by course report performed by the CGFNS (Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools).
  • Submit evidence of having successfully achieved minimum passing scores required in the English Proficiency Exam, TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language exam). Submit the proof only to CGFNS.
  • Submit completed licensure application for graduates of any foreign nursing program, which includes the educational and experiential background details of the applicant.
  • Enclose a total non-refundable fee of $225.00 ($120.00 license fee, $100.00 application fee and a $5.00 surcharge fee) in the form of money order or personal check (while paying through paper application) made payable to the “New Jersey Board of Nursing”.

Registered Nursing (RN) & Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) Licensure by Endorsement

Applicants Must Meet the Following Requirements:

  • Submit online application or printable application.
  • Complete the entire application and have it notarized.
  • Sign the application.
  • Attach a clear, full-face passport photograph (2 ̋x 2 ̋) of your head and shoulders, taken within the past six months, with your name printed on the back of the photo. Note: Photocopies are not acceptable.
  • Complete two (2) fingerprint cards (one black (New Jersey), one blue (F.B.I.), if applicable. Complete the Certification and Authorization form.
  • Complete the MorphoTrust universal form.
  • Provide written verification of licensure in good standing from the state in which you were originally licensed, or are currently licensed, and from every state in which you have ever been licensed. The verification must be forwarded directly to the New Jersey Board of Nursing from the applicable state board(s), if those state(s) are not listed on the NURSYS License Verification Form.
  • Submit a personal check or money order in the amount of $200.00 made payable to the New Jersey Board of Nursing.
  • Submit a personal check or money order in the amount of $63.19 for out-of-state applicants, made payable to MorphoTrust.
  • Submit the completed “Checklist for Endorsement,” with your signature at the bottom.
